Wycombe 1-1 Fulham: Cottagers Progress After Penalty Shootout
Posted on October 29, 2025
Fulham managed to edge past Wycombe Wanderers in a tense Carabao Cup fourth-round clash, winning 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Benjamin Lecomte emerged as the hero for Fulham, saving three penalties during the shootout, ensuring their place in the quarter-finals.
The match began with a surprise as Wycombe took the lead early on. Former Fulham player Cauley Woodrow scored a stunning opener in the 4th minute, catching Lecomte off guard at his near post. Despite this early setback, Fulham dominated possession but struggled to break down a resolute Wycombe defense.
Fulham equalized shortly after halftime when teenager Josh King executed a clever backheel flick from a corner, leveling the score at 1-1 and showcasing his potential as a rising star in the squad. However, despite their pressure, Fulham could not find a second goal, and the match progressed to penalties.
In the shootout, Wycombe's Ewan Henderson had his effort saved by Lecomte, putting Fulham in a favorable position. After both teams exchanged perfect penalties, the shootout entered sudden death. Fulham's Issa Diop ultimately sealed the victory, scoring the decisive spot-kick after a series of missed opportunities from Wycombe players.
Wycombe's head coach Michael Duff expressed pride in his team's performance despite the loss, highlighting their diligent efforts and strong defensive display. Meanwhile, Fulham’s manager Marco Silva acknowledged the need for improvement but praised the team for their commitment to winning.
The match was marred by an unfortunate incident when an assistant referee was reportedly struck by a bottle thrown from the crowd after Diop's winning penalty, leading Wycombe to condemn the behavior and vowing to identify the perpetrator.
With this victory, Fulham moves forward in the Carabao Cup, while Wycombe will need to regroup as they continue their campaign in League One.
