Gary O'Neil Withdraws from Wolves Managerial Race After Talks
Posted on November 04, 2025
Gary O'Neil has officially withdrawn from consideration to become the next head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers after engaging in discussions with the club. The former Wolves manager, who previously led the team for over 14 months, believes that this is not the right time for his return.
O'Neil's departure from the managerial race comes after Igor Tudor was sacked following a disappointing start to the season, where Wolves managed only two points from their first ten Premier League games. The club is now seeking a new leader as they look to improve their fortunes.
While O'Neil had positive conversations with the Wolves hierarchy, he felt that the opportunity did not align with his current ambitions. He previously had a mixed tenure at Molineux, finishing 14th in the Premier League and reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals during his first season before a poor start to his second campaign led to his dismissal.
As Wolves continues to search for a replacement, other candidates are being considered, including Rob Edwards, who has made his mark at Middlesbrough this season. Edwards has previously managed Luton Town, leading them to promotion to the Premier League.
With Wolves being the only winless side in England's top four divisions, the club faces an uphill battle to turn their season around. The search for a new manager is critical as they aim to avert the risk of relegation and restore confidence within the squad. The football community will be watching closely to see who will take on the challenge at Molineux in the coming days.
