Ajax to Sack Manager John Heitinga After Disappointing Stint

Posted on November 07, 2025

Ajax has announced the decision to part ways with manager John Heitinga less than six months after his appointment, following a string of disappointing performances. The 41-year-old, who joined Ajax from Liverpool where he served as an assistant coach, has faced significant challenges, leading the team to only five victories in 11 Eredivisie matches and failing to secure any points in their four Champions League games this season.

Heitinga’s tenure has been marked by struggles, including a recent 3-0 defeat at home to Galatasaray, which underscored the team’s difficulties on the European stage. With Ajax currently sitting eight points behind league leaders Feyenoord, the club felt that a change was necessary to revitalize their campaign.

Technical director Alex Kroes expressed that the decision was painful but necessary, acknowledging the time given to Heitinga to implement his vision with a squad undergoing changes. Heitinga's assistant, Marcel Keizer, will also be dismissed, while Fred Grim has been appointed as the interim manager to guide the team through this transitional period.

Ajax is reportedly considering a return to former manager Erik ten Hag, who has had a tumultuous time since leaving the club, including a short-lived stint at Bayer Leverkusen. The club's leadership is keen to restore its competitive edge, and with a significant overhaul in management, they hope to return to the top of Dutch football.

As Ajax prepares for the next steps, the focus will be on identifying a suitable replacement who can lead the team back to success both domestically and in Europe. The upcoming matches will be crucial for the interim management and the players as they look to regain form and confidence.
