André Onana Omitted from Cameroon Squad as Coach Marc Brys is Sacked

Posted on December 02, 2025

André Onana has been left out of Cameroon's squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) amidst a backdrop of turmoil following the dismissal of head coach Marc Brys. The decision was made by Samuel Eto’o, the newly re-elected president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), after Brys faced serious allegations, including inciting players against the federation and various instances of professional misconduct.

Brys, who had a contentious tenure since his appointment in April 2024, has been accused of failing to attend crucial meetings, delaying squad announcements, and jeopardizing sponsor relationships. His replacement, David Pagou, faces the daunting task of preparing a squad for the tournament without several key players, including Onana and team captain Vincent Aboubakar.

Onana's exclusion is particularly striking given his history as Cameroon’s first-choice goalkeeper. He had recently regained his spot after a period of suspension during the 2022 World Cup. With several influential players missing due to injuries or ongoing issues, Cameroon’s Afcon campaign faces significant challenges.

As the team gears up for the tournament beginning December 21, they will need to navigate a tough group that includes the defending champions Ivory Coast and Gabon. The current instability raises questions about the effectiveness of the new management under Eto’o and the future of Cameroonian football.
