South Korea savored a dramatic 2-1 quarter-final victory over Australia at the Asian Cup. The fan-favorite Heung-min Son stole the spotlight once again, hitting an incredible free-kick winner in extra time, maintaining South Korea's quest for their first Asian Cup title since 1960.
The fight was a balanced, tense confrontation echoing the 2015 final, only this time, it was South Korea who emerged victorious after an additional 30 minutes. They are now set to face off against Jordan, who are first-time semi-finalists, in the upcoming Wednesday showdown.
Australia initially led the game before halftime, thanks to a remarkable volley from Craig Goodwin, assisted by Connor Metcalfe. However, the second half of the match saw South Korea dominate the field, with a significant comeback, highlighting them as the stronger team.
Notably, a reckless tackle by Hibernian's Lewis Miller on Son resulted in a penalty. Hwang Hee-chan of Wolves stepped up to ensure South Korea's survival into extra time. Once in extra time, they managed to capitalize on Australia's repeated failures to secure a goal, with Son executing a spectacular free-kick.
Despite having to fend off Australian attacks in the second half of the extra time, South Korea prevailed to set up a semi-final against Jordan. With this momentum, South Korea enters as clear favorites for the final on the coming Saturday.
