Everton's appeal reduces points deduction from 10 to 6

Posted on February 27, 2024

Official sources confirm that after an appeal, Everton's points deduction has been reduced from 10 to 6, lifting them to 15th place in the Premier League standings.

Last November, Everton had been docked 10 points for breaching the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). According to The Athletic, after Everton's appeal, the deduction was reduced to 6 points. Everton's official statement subsequently confirmed this news.

Following the reduction in points deduction, Everton's total points rise to 25 (8 wins, 7 draws, 11 losses in 26 games), placing them 15th in the Premier League table.

Everton's official announcement:

Everton can confirm that the appeals committee has made a ruling that the deduction of points imposed by the independent Premier League commission in November last year will be reduced from 10 points to 6 points, effective immediately. While the club is still digesting the decision of the appeals committee, we are satisfied that our appeal has resulted in a reduction of the points deduction.

While the club is still digesting the decision of the appeals committee, we are satisfied with the reduction in the points deduction resulting from the appeal. According to our understanding, the appeals committee deemed the initial implementation of a 10-point deduction inappropriate, based on the benchmarks provided by the club to the committee (including the circumstances stipulated by the relevant regulations of the FA and the 9-point deduction specified in the Premier League's own rules for cases of bankruptcy).

The club is also particularly pleased to see the appeals committee overturn the original commission's finding of a lack of maximum good faith by the club. This decision, along with the reduced points deduction, represents a crucial point of principle for the club in its appeal. Therefore, the club believes its appeal was the right course of action. While the appeals committee has made its decision and achieved a positive outcome, the club will continue to fully cooperate with the Premier League regarding the legal action brought for the accounting period ending June 2023.

The club is still considering the wide-ranging implications of this decision and will not make further comments at this time, but will thank our Fans' Consultation Committee and other fan groups, as well as all Evertonians, for their continued support and patience throughout this process.
