Spanish Football Federation Under Investigation for Corruption

Posted on March 22, 2024

As part of a broader corruption probe, a police investigation was conducted at the headquarters of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), as well as the home of its former president, Luis Rubiales, who resigned last year due to a separate controversy. The operation was part of an extensive investigation into alleged business corruption, mishandling of assets, and money laundering.

Officials conducted 11 search operations throughout Spain, and the authorities expect to make seven arrests in connection to the case. While this happened, RFEF staff were restricted from entering the headquarters. Simultaneously, the Spanish national men's team continued their training on a pitch near the federation headquarters.

The timing of this operation comes just before Spain's friendly match against Colombia scheduled for Friday at London Stadium, home of West Ham United. While the team prepares for its international fixture, these allegations cast a dark cloud over Spanish football.

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the federation, had his residence searched as part of the investigation. Rubiales resigned last year after receiving criticism for inappropriate conduct with Spain forward Jenni Hermoso during the Women's World Cup final presentation ceremony. Both Rubiales and Hermoso, along with other colleagues, have given their statements to the judge overseeing the case. The case is expected to progress to trial soon.
