Official announcement: Aston Villa has officially signed Dutch defender Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.
Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea. The 22-year-old player, who helped Borussia Dortmund reach the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League final, was also included in this season's UEFA Champions League Best XI. Maatsen is currently with the Dutch national team participating in the Euros in Germany this summer.
He becomes Unai Emery’s second signing of the summer transfer window. In the second half of last season, the highly acclaimed left-back was loaned to Borussia Dortmund, where he impressed. Maatsen made 16 appearances in the Bundesliga and 7 in the Champions League, scoring a goal in the quarter-final victory over Atlético Madrid. (End of announcement)
According to previous reports, Aston Villa signed Maatsen for a transfer fee of £37.5 million, with both parties agreeing on a contract until June 2030.
