Chris Sutton picks Euro 2024 finalists and England's fate after going 4/4 in quarter-finals

Posted on July 09, 2024

England supporters will hope Chris Sutton is able to continue his impressive recent streak of predictions as the Three Lions go up against the Netherlands in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

Sutton, who won one cap for England as a player, predicted Gareth Southgate's side would squeeze past Switzerland in the quarter-finals. While he didn't get the score correct - backing a 1-0 win rather than the penalty shoot-out victory which transpired - it capped a four-out-of-four return in his quarter-final predictions.

He got two of the other three results spot on, backing 2-1 wins for Spain against Germany and the Netherlands against Turkey, while expecting France to be more comfortable against Portugal than their eventual shoot-out win. If he gets things right again for the semis, we'll be looking at an England vs France final.

"I don't think anything is going to drastically change in the way England play - they are not going to suddenly find some amazing patterns of play that break the Netherlands down," Sutton wrote in his BBC column. "Instead, if England are going to reach their second successive Euros final, they are going to have to rely on individual brilliance again.

"I have not just been blindly backing them to get through each knockout round in Germany but they are definitely on the more gentle side of the draw. This is their toughest game yet, and it is going to be very close, but I do think England will edge it... somehow."

He has backed a 2-1 win for England, and a victory by the same scoreline for France against Spain. "Of course [Kylian] Mbappe could play like the superstar he is, or [Ousmane] Dembele could cause Marc Cucurella problems if he starts... but it is more likely that France will just smother Spain and, even if they do not play well, get the job done," he wrote.
