Aston Villa Secure £50m Deal for Everton's Amadou Onana
Posted on July 23, 2024
Aston Villa have bolstered their midfield by completing a £50 million transfer for Amadou Onana from Everton. This significant acquisition is part of Unai Emery's strategy to strengthen the squad ahead of their Champions League campaign. Onana's arrival marks Villa's eighth signing of the summer transfer window, following the additions of Ian Maatsen, Enzo Barrenechea, Samuel Iling-Junior, Ross Barkley, Lewis Dobbin, Cameron Archer, and Jaden Philogene.
Onana, who joined Everton from Lille for £30 million in 2022, made 72 appearances for the Toffees, including 37 last season. Despite a mixed reception from Everton supporters, his potential and performance at Euro 2024, where Belgium reached the last 16, have caught the attention of Villa.
The 22-year-old midfielder becomes Villa’s second-most expensive signing, trailing only Moussa Diaby, who is set to transfer to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia for £50 million. Onana's move is seen as a strategic reinforcement for Villa, adding depth and quality to their midfield as they prepare for their return to Europe’s elite competition.
Sky Sports analyst Ben Grounds highlights that while Onana may not be a direct replacement for Douglas Luiz, his acquisition reflects a significant investment in future potential. Onana's composure and ability to handle tight situations will be crucial for Villa as they aim to make a mark in the Champions League.
This transfer also provides financial relief for Everton, who are looking to retain other key players like Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Onana's departure aligns with his ambitions of playing in the Champions League, offering a win-win scenario for both clubs involved.
The Premier League summer transfer window remains open, closing on August 30th, allowing clubs to finalize their squads for the upcoming season.
