Everton Secure Signing of Lyon's Jake O'Brien
Posted on August 01, 2024
Everton have officially signed Republic of Ireland defender Jake O'Brien from Lyon on a four-year deal worth £16.4 million. The 23-year-old, who made 27 appearances for the French Ligue 1 side last season, becomes Everton's fifth signing of the summer. He joins the club following the arrivals of Tim Iroegbunam, Iliman Ndiaye, Jesper Lindstrom, and the returning Jack Harrison.
Expressing his excitement, O'Brien said, "I'm buzzing and so happy to have signed. I've been dreaming of this kind of move in the Premier League, with such a historic club. It's a very exciting move for me." He emphasized his desire to play for Everton, describing it as a "huge club" with a "big future."
O'Brien began his football journey with Cork City in his hometown before moving to Crystal Palace's academy on loan, later making the move permanent. His career path included loan spells at Swindon Town and Belgian club RWD Molenbeek before he signed with Lyon last summer.
Everton manager Sean Dyche praised O'Brien's potential and the valuable experience he brings. "Jake further strengthens our talented core of centre-backs and adds competition to our squad which can help us continue to progress," Dyche noted. He also highlighted O'Brien's international experience and impressive attributes, predicting a bright future for the young defender at Everton.
O'Brien's addition is expected to bolster Everton's defense as they aim for a successful season ahead in the Premier League.
