Morata and Rodri Face Suspension for Controversial Chant

Posted on August 08, 2024

Spain's Euro 2024 victory celebrations have been overshadowed by controversy as captain Alvaro Morata and midfielder Rodri received one-match bans from UEFA. The disciplinary action follows their involvement in chanting "Gibraltar is Spanish" during post-match celebrations in Madrid's Cibeles Square.

The Gibraltar Football Association lodged a formal complaint, citing the provocative nature of the chants, which occurred after Spain's 2-1 win against England in the final. UEFA charged the players with failing to adhere to conduct principles and engaging in non-sporting behavior.

As a result, both players will miss Spain's upcoming match against Serbia on September 5. The incident has reignited tensions over Gibraltar, a British territory claimed by Spain since the 18th century. Gibraltar has been a UEFA member since 2013, and its association condemned the celebrations as insulting and inappropriate for football.

This disciplinary action serves as a reminder of the responsibility athletes hold in maintaining sportsmanship and respect, even in moments of victory.
