The format for the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup has been officially confirmed
Posted on September 21, 2024
The FIFA Council Bureau has made a series of important decisions regarding the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, an annual FIFA club competition.
The 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup will consist of five matches, starting on September 22, 2024, and concluding on December 18, 2024. The first two matches will be held in the home countries of the host teams, with the remaining matches taking place in Qatar.
Starting in 2024, for the first time, more than one team will have the chance to play at home in this competition. In the first two matches, the clubs ranked higher will face off, allowing more people than ever to witness their club's performance in a FIFA tournament.
In the first match, the Africa-Asia-Pacific Playoff, the 2023/2024 AFC Champions League winner, Al Ain, will play the 2024 OFC Champions League winner, Auckland City, on September 22, 2024, in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.
The winner of the first match will face the 2023/2024 CAF Champions League winner, Al Ahly, in Cairo, Egypt, on October 29, 2024, in the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup.
The third match, officially titled the "Americas Derby," will take place on December 11, 2024, with 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Pachuca facing the 2024 Copa Libertadores champion (to be confirmed on November 30, 2024).
On December 14, 2024, the winners of the second and third matches will compete in the fourth match for the Challenger Cup and a place in the final.
December 18, 2024, which is also Qatar's National Day and the two-year anniversary of the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, will see the Challenger Cup winner face the 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League winner, Real Madrid, in the Intercontinental Cup final.
