Barcelona has abandoned its lawsuit against Nike
Posted on October 08, 2024
According to reports, Barcelona has abandoned its lawsuit against Nike, and the two sides are now closer to renewing their partnership.
In Barcelona's official financial report for the 2023/24 season, the club highlighted the agreement reached with Nike on August 12, 2024. Under this agreement, Barcelona will no longer proceed with "submitting the appropriate documents to the court," a procedure initiated when the club filed the lawsuit on October 23, 2023. According to Mundo Deportivo, this decision aligns with new negotiations to extend the existing sponsorship contract until 2028.
In the lawsuit filed a year ago, Barcelona sought the right to terminate its contract with Nike as of June 30, 2024, without the company being entitled to compensation. The club also requested a formal declaration that the contract was terminated, and that Nike had no right to receive compensation. The Seventh Commercial Court of Barcelona accepted the case, and Nike responded to the lawsuit on November 29, 2023, requesting precautionary measures. Barcelona then made further demands, but these were rejected by the Barcelona Provincial Court on July 11, 2024. This ruling indicated that Barcelona would likely be unable to terminate the contract with Nike without compensation. The contract is set to remain in effect until 2028.
Following this summer, negotiations between Barcelona and the Oregon-based multinational company to renew the sponsorship deal, which has been in place since 1998, are nearing completion.
