Pelicans’ Dejounte Murray undergoes surgery, set to miss 4-6 weeks
Posted on October 26, 2024
New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured left hand and will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. The injury is a significant setback for the Pelicans, who were counting on Murray as a cornerstone of their revamped backcourt.
Murray arrived in New Orleans this offseason as part of a high-profile trade with the Atlanta Hawks. In exchange, the Pelicans sent Larry Nance Jr., Dyson Daniels, and future draft picks. The acquisition addressed a major weakness for the Pelicans at the point guard position, giving them a two-way player known for his defense, playmaking, and improved shooting. Murray’s ability to distribute the ball and defend opposing guards was seen as a perfect complement to CJ McCollum and Zion Williamson.
Contract and Impact on the Team Murray is currently in the second year of a four-year, $120 million contract, making him a long-term investment for the Pelicans. The front office hopes that his presence will help elevate the team into serious playoff contention, especially in the competitive Western Conference. Murray’s injury, however, delays the development of crucial chemistry in the starting unit.
Head coach Willie Green has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to weather the injury but acknowledged the setback. “It’s unfortunate timing for Dejounte,” Green said. “He’s been working hard to get integrated with the group. We’ll rally around him and make sure he gets the support he needs.”
Filling the Void Dejounte Murray made his impression felt in his Pelicans debut, nearly posting a triple-double with 14 points, 10 assists (one turnover), and eight rebounds against the Bulls on Wednesday night. He got to the free throw line (6-of-7) and generally made the game easier for his teammates, exactly as he was tasked to do.
With Murray out, the Pelicans will have to rely heavily on McCollum to handle the ball, while Jose Alvarado, Jordan Hawkins, and Javonte Green should expect more minutes. Brandon Ingram and Herb Jones might also take on additional playmaking responsibilities until Murray returns. The Pelicans must navigate a challenging early-season schedule without one of their top defenders, a tall order in the loaded Western Conference.
