New Report Offers Concerning Update On Health Of San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich
Posted on November 06, 2024
Legendary San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich missed Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers due to what the team called an undiclosed health problem.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania gave an update on the 75-year-old, five-time NBA champion, and what he had to say was, admittedly, very concerning.
“I’m told that it was a health issue, and it was a serious health issue that the Spurs dealt with and Gregg Popovich dealt with over the weekend,” Charania said. “It was a situation on Saturday night pregame that Gregg Popovich needed medical attention in San Antonio. It is still uncertain when he’s going to make it back on the floor, on the sidelines for this team. There is a great level of concern around the situation for the Spurs, for Gregg Popovich.”
Greg Popovich’s Legacy In The Game Of Basketball Goes Way Beyond The Court
On top of being one of the most successful coaches in NBA history, Popovich is also known as one of the most beloved. Former Spurs players routinely talk about his immense generosity.
That includes six-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan, who shared a touching story about how Popovich handled the passing of his father.
“My pops had passed when I was playing in San Antonio. We were stuck in Charlotte and I called the GM like ‘yo, bro, I’m about to fly home tonight, I’m about to try to get a plane outta here, I gotta get home. My pops just passed,'” DeRozan said during an appearance on The 25/10 Show. “So I call the GM. I didn’t want anybody to know, I didn’t want it to be all in the media. Literally 90 seconds later I hear a knock on the door. It’s Pop. Pop sat in a room with me and cried with me for about two hours. He was like ‘I’m not leaving until you leave.’ And that just showed the person he was.”
Popovich’s influence on the game of basketball is matched by very few. But few, in any coaches can match the influence he’s had on the lives of the hundreds of players he’s coached. The basketball world is better with him around, and here’s hoping he can return to sidelines happy and healthy in the near future.
