Victor Wembanyama Diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis, Expected to Miss Remainder of Season

Posted on February 21, 2025

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder, which will sideline him for the remainder of the NBA season. The diagnosis was made after Wembanyama returned to Texas following the All-Star break in San Francisco. The 7-foot-3 rookie, who hails from France, was having an outstanding season, averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, and 3.7 assists per game, making significant contributions to the Spurs’ playoff aspirations.

The Spurs, currently vying for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference, have seen a marked improvement this season, already surpassing their win total from last year. Wembanyama's absence is expected to have a substantial impact on the team's chances of securing one of the final play-in spots. CBS Sports noted that this injury is a "massive blow" for both Wembanyama and the Spurs, as they were putting together a strong season after a previous year of struggles.

Deep vein thrombosis is characterized by the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, typically in the legs or pelvis, but it can occur elsewhere in the body. While it can cause pain or swelling, many cases present no symptoms. DVT can lead to serious complications if clots dislodge and travel to the lungs, potentially causing a pulmonary embolism. The Spurs are optimistic about Wembanyama's recovery and expect him to be ready for the start of the next season. Updates on his condition will be shared as they become available.
