NBA Explores New Basketball League with European Football Teams
Posted on March 27, 2025
The NBA is in discussions with several prominent European football clubs about the potential establishment of a new basketball league on the continent. This initiative marks a significant step in the NBA’s international expansion efforts and aims to enhance the global presence of basketball.
During a recent NBA Board of Governors meeting, the league's representatives indicated that they are exploring the formation of a new men's basketball league in collaboration with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Among the football clubs engaged in preliminary talks are Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Manchester City, as well as potential backers for a London-based basketball team. These discussions include considerations for investment and venue options for the proposed league.
According to a spokesperson from Qatar Sports Investments, which owns PSG, the organization has shown interest in a basketball franchise in Paris. Reports suggest that the NBA is contemplating launching approximately eight franchises across Europe, each potentially available for an initial fee of around $500 million.
Additionally, there are broader ambitions to create a basketball league that could extend across Asia and Europe, aiming to rival the NBA. This effort includes strategic partnerships, notably with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund and advisory support from UBS, as reported earlier this year.
As the NBA continues to seek new avenues for growth, the collaboration with European football teams could open up exciting opportunities for basketball in regions where the sport is rapidly gaining popularity.
