NBA Scraps All-Star Mini-Tournament for 2026
Posted on March 28, 2025
The NBA has announced that it will not continue with the All-Star mini-tournament format implemented this past season. Commissioner Adam Silver stated that the league is going back to the drawing board after deeming the recent tournament a "miss." The mini-tournament featured a four-team setup that included 24 All-Stars and a team of rookies and sophomores who earned their spot by winning the Rising Stars event. Each matchup was played to a target score of 40 points without a set time limit.
Reflecting on the experience, Silver acknowledged that the league has not yet created an All-Star experience that satisfies either the players or the organization. The decision to implement the mini-tournament was intended to revive competitiveness in the All-Star Game, which had been criticized for lacking intensity in recent years. However, reactions from players were mixed, with some appreciating the new format while others were indifferent.
The NBA's All-Star Game will shift to NBC next season, providing an opportunity for collaboration on a new format. Silver hinted that next year's event, scheduled during the Milan-Cortina Olympics, could potentially feature a U.S. versus International format. The All-Star Game will be broadcast on February 15, 2026, from Inglewood, California, aligning with the Olympics coverage that NBC will also showcase.
Overall, the league aims to develop a more engaging and competitive All-Star experience, indicating that further adjustments will be made as they seek to enhance the event for players and fans alike.
