Stephon Castle Named 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year

Posted on April 30, 2025

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle has been awarded the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year, marking a significant achievement for both the player and the franchise. Castle follows in the footsteps of last year’s recipient, Victor Wembanyama, and becomes the fourth player in Spurs history to earn this accolade, joining legends David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Castle’s impressive performance throughout the season solidified his status as the standout rookie. Selected as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, he averaged 14.7 points and 4.1 assists per game over 26.7 minutes. One of his most memorable performances came in February when he scored 33 points against the Charlotte Hornets, showcasing his potential and talent on the court.

Despite the Spurs facing various challenges this season, including the absence of head coach Gregg Popovich due to health issues and the sidelining of Wembanyama with a medical condition, Castle's emergence provided a silver lining for the team. The Spurs were 23-29 at the All-Star break and had hoped to contend for a playoff spot with the arrival of De’Aaron Fox, but injuries derailed those aspirations. Moving forward, the combination of Castle, Wembanyama, Fox, and Devin Vassell gives the franchise a promising core to build around as they aim to return to competitive form in the coming seasons.

Castle's recognition as Rookie of the Year not only highlights his individual talent but also signals optimism for the Spurs' future as they look to regroup and strengthen their roster.
