Celtics Part Ways with Kristaps Porzingis Following Disappointing Postseason
Posted on July 10, 2025
The Boston Celtics have officially severed ties with center Kristaps Porzingis after a disappointing postseason performance, marking a significant roster adjustment as they enter the offseason. Porzingis, who was part of a blockbuster trade to the Atlanta Hawks, is now set to join the Eastern Conference team, following a tumultuous two-year stint with the Celtics marred by injuries.
Despite showcasing his skills during the regular season—averaging 19.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game—Porzingis struggled in the playoffs, where he became one of the team's least effective players. In the postseason, he averaged only 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds, struggling to find his rhythm and connecting on just 31.6% of his field goal attempts. His lack of production during critical moments ultimately led the Celtics to seek a new direction.
In the three-team trade finalized at the end of June, the Celtics acquired Georges Niang and a second-round pick, while the Hawks received Porzingis and another second-round pick. The Celtics are now focusing on retooling their roster, having also traded away Jrue Holiday, as they aim to reshape their team under the constraints of salary cap regulations.
Porzingis, now moving to Atlanta, brings with him a championship pedigree and the potential to contribute significantly to the Hawks, as emphasized by their general manager. As the Celtics look ahead, the organization is committed to making necessary changes to improve their chances of success in the upcoming season.
