Los Angeles Lakers Waive Shake Milton Ahead of Marcus Smart Signing

Posted on July 21, 2025

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially waived guard Shake Milton as they prepare to clear space for the potential signing of Marcus Smart. Milton, who averaged 5.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists during the last season while shooting 45.3% from the field, was informed of his release just before his $3 million contract for the upcoming season would have become fully guaranteed.

Milton joined the Lakers after spending time with the Brooklyn Nets, and he was initially drafted as the 54th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft following a successful college career. His performance peaked during his third season with the Philadelphia 76ers when he averaged 13.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists.

The Lakers are now focusing on restructuring their roster to accommodate Smart, whose acquisition is seen as a strategic move to bolster their lineup. Following a playoff exit in the first round against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team is looking to improve its chances in the upcoming season. To make room for Smart, the Lakers may also consider waiving Jordan Goodwin or executing a trade that involves taking back less salary.

As the Lakers navigate these changes, they hope to strengthen their position in the Western Conference after finishing third last season with a 50-32 record.
