NBA Executives Skeptical of Yang Hansen's Potential with the Blazers
Posted on July 26, 2025
Yang Hansen, the Portland Trail Blazers’ first-round selection from the 2025 NBA Draft, is facing skepticism from league executives regarding his future impact in the NBA. After the Blazers traded down from the 11th pick to select Hansen at 16, expectations were modest. While he showcased some promising skills during the Summer League, particularly in his passing ability for a seven-footer, a recent poll of 20 NBA executives revealed a lack of confidence in his potential among his draft peers.
The poll, conducted by ESPN, highlighted that Hansen is largely seen as a non-factor compared to other rookies. In the Rookie of the Year predictions, Dallas Mavericks pick Cooper Flagg dominated the votes, receiving 17 out of 20, while Hansen's name barely registered. He did receive one vote in the “Best Pick Besides Flagg” category, but that was overshadowed by Philadelphia 76ers’ VJ Edgecombe, who garnered 10 votes.
In terms of draft evaluations, Hansen did not fare well in categories like "Biggest Draft Steal," where he received no votes, indicating that many believe he was not a hidden gem in this year's draft. Conversely, he did place second in the “Biggest Draft Reach” category, with four votes, suggesting that some executives feel he may have been selected too high.
Despite the current negativity surrounding his selection, there remains optimism within the Blazers' organization. Hansen has the opportunity to prove the doubters wrong, but he will need to show significant improvement and consistency as he transitions into the regular season.
As the Blazers prepare for the upcoming 2025-26 season, the pressure will be on Hansen to establish himself as a valuable asset to the team and to validate the decision to draft him amid a challenging rebuilding process.
