Houston Rockets Sign G League MVP JD Davison to Two-Way Deal
Posted on July 28, 2025
The Houston Rockets have made a notable addition to their roster by signing reigning NBA G League MVP JD Davison to a two-way contract. The announcement came this weekend, following his recent release from the Boston Celtics. This strategic move allows Davison the flexibility to play both with the Rockets' main roster and their G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Davison, a former second-round draft pick by the Celtics, had a standout season in the G League where he averaged impressive numbers: 25.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game while playing for the Maine Celtics. Although he appeared in 16 games for the Celtics, his time on the main roster was limited, averaging just 2.1 points in under six minutes per game. His recent waiver by Boston was part of their efforts to manage their salary cap, as they were nearing the second luxury tax apron.
For the Rockets, the addition of Davison does not significantly impact their salary cap, given the nature of the two-way contract. This is particularly beneficial as the team is looking to bolster its guard depth, an area where they have shown some vulnerability. Current guards on the roster include Fred VanVleet, Reed Sheppard, and Aaron Holiday, but Davison's versatility and G League success provide an opportunity for him to earn more playing time under coach Ime Udoka.
As he transitions to Houston, Davison will need to reaffirm his skills with the Vipers, showcasing both his defensive capabilities and scoring potential to earn a more prominent role with the Rockets. His performance will be closely monitored as the team prepares for the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season, and if he can capitalize on this opportunity, he may become an integral part of the Rockets' future plans.
