NBA All-Star Game Set for New Format: U.S. vs. International Teams

Posted on September 11, 2025

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has announced plans for a revamped All-Star Game format, aiming to implement a structure reminiscent of a "Ryder Cup-type format" by the start of the 2025-26 regular season. This change follows the league's acknowledgment of recent All-Star games failing to engage fans, with Silver expressing disappointment in the previous formats and their execution on the court.

The new structure is expected to feature a round-robin tournament where two teams of domestic players will compete against an international squad. Each team will consist of eight players, and the games will be played in 12-minute quarters. Silver emphasized the importance of establishing clear rules and expectations for the All-Star Game as the regular season kicks off, aiming for clarity among players, fans, and stakeholders alike.

This shift represents a notable departure from the mini-tournament format used in the 2025 All-Star Game in San Francisco, which included four teams competing in three games. Silver described that format as a "miss" and has been actively collaborating with the National Basketball Players Association to finalize the new rules. The goal is to create a more exciting and engaging All-Star experience, especially with the All-Star break coinciding with the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina.

As anticipation builds for the 2026 All-Star Game, scheduled for February 15 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, there is hope that the new format will reignite interest and enthusiasm for the annual event, showcasing the best talent from both the U.S. and around the world.
