Mark Cuban Open to Future NBA Ownership Under Specific Conditions
Posted on September 13, 2025
Mark Cuban, the former majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has hinted that he might consider purchasing another NBA team in the future, but only under certain conditions. During a recent appearance on the Road Trippin' podcast, Cuban addressed the possibility of returning to team ownership following his sale of the Mavericks, where he still retains a minority stake.
Cuban expressed that while he remains committed to Dallas, the competitive side of him is not completely averse to the idea of owning another franchise. He mentioned discussions with Tom Dundon, the new owner of the Portland Trail Blazers, regarding the potential for Cuban to join the ownership group in Portland. However, he made it clear that any future involvement would require him to be the majority owner, stating, “Unless I can be majority owner, I’m not going to do it.”
Reflecting on his previous ownership experience, Cuban noted that the landscape of the NBA has changed significantly since he first acquired the Mavericks in 2000. He acknowledged that the financial dynamics of the league necessitate new revenue streams, which he is not interested in pursuing, such as real estate development or casino partnerships. This perspective has shaped his decision to step back from the day-to-day governance of the team.
Cuban's comments indicate that while he has stepped away from a prominent role in the NBA, he remains open to opportunities that align with his vision and ambitions as a team owner. His focus now appears to be on personal interests and family priorities, but he won't completely close the door on a return to the NBA if the right situation arises.
