Russell Westbrook Signs with Sacramento Kings for 18th NBA Season

Posted on October 16, 2025

Russell Westbrook has officially agreed to join the Sacramento Kings for the upcoming NBA season, marking the start of his 18th year in the league. The nine-time All-Star, represented by agent Jeff Schwartz, is set to sign a one-year contract valued at $3.6 million, which is the veteran's minimum salary. This agreement comes after Westbrook maintained communication with the Kings throughout the offseason, demonstrating patience during his free agency.

Westbrook's connection with several key players, including Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine, as well as a history with Dennis Schroder, played a significant role in his decision to join Sacramento. His relationship with Kings general manager Scott Perry and head coach Doug Christie also contributed positively to the negotiations. The Kings are looking to bolster their backcourt depth, and Westbrook's versatility allows him to function effectively as both a starter and a reserve.

Last season, Westbrook played 75 games with the Denver Nuggets, averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while shooting 44.9% from the field. Notably, he achieved a career-best 52% shooting on two-pointers. Throughout the past three seasons, he has come off the bench in 145 of 216 games, consistently finishing in the top 10 for Sixth Man of the Year voting.

As he approaches his 37th birthday in November, Westbrook continues to hold impressive career statistics, including the most triple-doubles in NBA history at 203. He is also among only two players to record over 25,000 points, 8,000 rebounds, and 8,000 assists, alongside LeBron James. With 26,205 career points, Westbrook is just 506 points shy of surpassing Oscar Robertson as the highest-scoring point guard in NBA history, and he needs 75 assists to join an elite group of players with 10,000 career assists.

This move to the Kings marks Westbrook's seventh team in his career, having previously played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers, and Denver Nuggets. His arrival in Sacramento is anticipated to significantly enhance the team’s competitive edge as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
