Kevin Durant Signs Two-Year, $90 Million Extension with Rockets
Posted on October 21, 2025
Kevin Durant has officially signed a two-year contract extension with the Houston Rockets worth $90 million, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. This new deal, confirmed by Durant's business partner and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman, falls short of the maximum contract extension of $120 million that Durant was eligible for. However, the decision to take a lower amount reflects his commitment to the Rockets and their long-term goals.
Durant's extension comes after a significant trade that brought him to Houston this past July as part of a historic seven-team deal with the Phoenix Suns. The addition of the two-time NBA champion and Finals MVP is expected to solidify the Rockets as serious contenders in the Western Conference, especially after they finished as the No. 2 seed last season.
Now 37 years old, Durant has been a crucial asset for the Rockets, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists last season while maintaining an impressive shooting percentage. His scoring abilities, particularly as a jump shooter, will be vital for a Houston team that struggled with effective field goal percentages in previous seasons.
Durant's record in the league is remarkable; he currently ranks eighth in career points and is poised to pass legends Wilt Chamberlain and Dirk Nowitzki on the all-time scoring list if he maintains his scoring pace this season. The Rockets have made substantial offseason moves alongside Durant's extension, including securing new deals for coach Ime Udoka and star players like Fred VanVleet and Jabari Smith Jr.
As the Rockets prepare to open their regular season against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, Durant's presence on the roster is seen as a pivotal factor in their quest for an NBA title, with the team currently holding the fifth-best odds to win the championship at 14-1.
