Canada Basketball announce roster for men’s FIBA Qualifiers

Posted on August 20, 2022

The full "summer core" will be in attendance for training camp, but only six NBA players will actually play in the fourth window of FIBA World Cup qualifying.

Canada Basketball announced the fifteen athletes participating in the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team (SMNT) training camp on Thursday afternoon, which will begin on August 22nd in Victoria, B.C. and will prepare the team for the fourth window of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers set to take place at the end of August.

Head Coach Nick Nurse and staff will select 12 players to represent Canada in qualification games against Argentina on August 25th in Victoria, and against Panama on August 29th in Panama City, Panama.

However, those 12 players will exclude Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks, Luguentz Dort and Khem Birch, who will attend training camp but not play in the qualifiers due to injury concerns or ongoing contract negotiations with their NBA clubs.

Still, the turnout for training camp is impressive considering that all 14 of the “summer core” players who committed to play for Canada in the three-year cycle leading into Paris will be in attendance including Dillon Brooks, who missed the previous round of qualifiers in July due to an unexcused absence, leading to speculation about his commitment. However, he will be back with the program and participating in training camp in Victoria.

While it’s unfortunate that so many NBA players will be unable to participate in the games, the important thing is that they can use training camps to build chemistry together and learn each other’s games and Nurse’s system in preparation for the games that really matter. And still, six NBA players will be available for the August gamesincluding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Oshae Brissett and veterans Cory Joseph, Kelly Olynyk and Dwight Powell.
