Former Lakers Part-Owner Magic Johnson Has Rejected Multiple NBA Ownership Offers
Posted on September 27, 2023
Hall of Fame Los Angeles Lakers point guard Magic Johnson has held many roles with the franchise since hanging up his sneakers for good. Actually he served, briefly, as the club's head coach before un-retiring, briefly, during the 1995-96 season to return as a veteran reserve.
He owned a piece of the franchise for decades before cashing out his shares, then returned once again to try his hand in a front office role.
Now, per Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press, the former 12-time All-Star has revealed that many prospective ownership groups have reached out to him about other opportunities with different franchises, but there's only one NBA team with which he wants to be involved now.
“I think because of the way fans love basketball you might have to think about that one, because I love coming to New York and going to the Garden and watching the Knicks play,” Johnson said. “I love being with fans who are so passionate about their team and the Knick fans are, and they’re smart. They’re smart basketball fans and so that one I would have to think about. I think that other than that, I would probably never think about ever being a part of another franchise.”
Johnson has a pretty diverse sports team ownership portfolio, with or without an NBA club.
