Posted on January 14, 2026, updated on January 14, 2026
Manchester United has officially announced the appointment of Michael Carrick as their caretaker head coach for the remainder of the season. Carrick, a former United player, will be supported by experienced staff including Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion.
This decision follows the departure of Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed after a series of disappointing results. Carrick previously had a brief stint as interim manager in 2021 and impressed the club officials with his vision during discussions regarding the role.
With Darren Fletcher stepping back to his previous position with the Under-18s, Carrick's immediate goal will be to prepare the team for the critical Manchester derby against City, aiming to rebuild morale and foster a winning mentality.
Carrick’s focus will be on maximizing the squad’s potential and returning to European competition. As the team faces a challenging schedule, his approach will be crucial in determining their fortunes for the rest of the season.
