Nottingham Forest managed to advance to the last 16 of the Europa League despite a 2-1 loss to Fenerbahce in the second leg of their knockout play-off, securing a 4-2 aggregate win. The home side entered the match with a comfortable lead but faced unexpected pressure from their Turkish opponents.
Kerem Akturkoglu put Fenerbahce on the scoreboard with a goal in the 22nd minute, reigniting hope for the visitors after they had trailed 3-1 after the first leg. He then added a second with a penalty shortly after the half-time break, making the aggregate score precariously close at 3-3.
Although Forest struggled initially, they found their rhythm in the second half. Callum Hudson-Odoi, coming off the bench, scored the equalizer in the 68th minute, capitalizing on a superb cross from Ola Aina. This crucial goal restored some calm and confidence to the Forest side.
Despite a nervy finish, where Fenerbahce pressed for a late equalizer, Forest held firm to secure progression in the tournament. Their successful aggregate score allows them to look forward to the upcoming draw, where they will await their next challenge, facing either Real Betis or FC Midtjylland.
Manager Vitor Pereira faced criticism for his decision to make multiple changes before the match, but the win ultimately provides a much-needed boost as they aim to carry this momentum into their domestic competitions.
