Senegal to Parade Afcon Trophy Amid Controversy Over Title Decision

Posted on March 27, 2026, updated on March 27, 2026

Despite being stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title, Senegal's Football Federation plans to parade the trophy ahead of their friendly match against Peru this Saturday. This decision comes in response to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarding the title to Morocco after a tumultuous final marred by disorder.

Senegal's historic victory over Morocco in January seemed to have ended with a chaotic match that saw Senegal’s players walk off the pitch after a controversial penalty was awarded late in the second half. However, following an appeal from Morocco, CAF overturned the result, declaring a 3-0 victory for Morocco.

The Senegalese Football Federation strongly opposes this decision, branding it "administrative robbery." They have lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has confirmed they are reviewing the matter. Federation president Abdoulaye Fall expressed the group’s determination to challenge CAF's ruling, emphasizing Senegal's resolve in fighting for their rightful recognition.

The planned parade is not only a show of pride but also a statement against the controversial ruling. As they prepare for a crucial friendly, Senegal aims to reclaim its dignity on the international stage and demonstrate strength amidst adversity. The outcome of the CAS decision will be significant for the federation and the future of Senegalese football.
