$11,000 Price Tag for World Cup Final Tickets Sparks Outrage

Posted on April 03, 2026, updated on April 03, 2026

The first open sale of tickets for the 2026 World Cup has revealed staggering prices, with the most expensive general admission ticket for the final costing up to $10,990 (£8,333). This is believed to be the highest ever price charged for a football match ticket, far exceeding the $1,604 (£1,214) top price for the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

The dramatic price increase has been met with significant backlash from supporters, who have described it as a "monumental betrayal." In their original World Cup bid, the host nations of the United States, Canada, and Mexico had indicated a maximum price of $1,550 (£1,174) for final tickets. However, by the time the tickets went on sale to members of each country's official supporters' club in December, the most expensive ticket had already risen to $8,680 (£6,581).

The open sale on Wednesday saw further price hikes, with category one final tickets increasing by as much as 38% compared to the supporters' club sale. This has priced out many fans, who will struggle to afford the exorbitant costs, especially when factoring in travel and accommodation expenses.

Fifa's handling of the ticket sales process has also been heavily criticized, with technical glitches, lack of transparency, and a confusing queue system frustrating supporters. The governing body has been accused of prioritizing corporate hospitality over providing affordable access for regular fans.

The opening of the official resale platform on Thursday has only exacerbated the situation, with one seller asking for an astronomical $82,780 (£62,646) for a single ticket. This highlights the potential for profiteering and the difficulty in regulating the secondary market.

As the excitement for the 2026 World Cup builds, Fifa's ticketing policies have cast a dark cloud over the event, pricing out many loyal supporters and alienating the very fans the tournament is supposed to celebrate. The governing body must urgently address these concerns and demonstrate a commitment to making the World Cup accessible to all.
