Maguire ban deepens United's defensive headache

Harry Maguire’s additional suspension has made Manchester United’s trip to Chelsea even more difficult. The defender will miss the match after the Football Association upheld a misconduct charge tied to his reaction after being sent off against Bournemouth.
Maguire was already banned for the red card itself, which ruled him out of United’s defeat to Leeds. The new sanction came after he was found to have used improper and abusive language toward the fourth official as he left the pitch.
The incident happened late in the Bournemouth match, when Maguire was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity after pulling back Evanilson. Bournemouth then levelled from the penalty spot through Eli Junior Kroupi, turning the incident into a costly one for United.
The FA said Maguire admitted the charge and was fined £30,000. Reports of the words spoken to the official differed slightly, but the central issue was that his conduct crossed the line after the dismissal.
For Manchester United, the timing could hardly be worse. Lisandro Martinez will also be unavailable after his own red card against Leeds, leaving the squad short of senior centre-backs heading into a crucial league fixture.
That shortage has already sparked debate over how United will line up at Stamford Bridge. With several regular defenders missing, the manager may have to rely on inexperienced options or shift players into unfamiliar roles.
The ban also adds pressure to a team trying to steady itself after recent defensive problems. Losing two centre-backs at once is a major setback, especially against a Chelsea side that will sense an opportunity to exploit the gaps.
