Ekitike's Achilles Rupture Deals Liverpool Major Setback
Posted on April 16, 2026, updated on April 16, 2026
Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike faces a lengthy absence after suffering a suspected Achilles tendon rupture during the Champions League quarter-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The injury occurred just 31 minutes into the second leg at Anfield, confirming a 4-0 aggregate loss and ending Liverpool's European campaign.
France coach Didier Deschamps confirmed the blow, stating Ekitike's "serious" problem will rule him out for the rest of the season and the 2026 World Cup. Recovery timelines for such injuries typically range from six to nine months, though full rehabilitation can take up to a year, leaving the 23-year-old's summer tournament hopes in tatters.
Ekitike had been a key figure since his £79m move from Eintracht Frankfurt, netting 19 goals across club and country this term. His teammates and manager Arne Slot expressed immediate concern, with Slot noting the forward "looks really bad" and teammate Ibrahima Konate offering prayers.
The timing exacerbates Liverpool's injury woes. Alexander Isak had only just returned from his own serious leg issue—his first start since December—while the squad has battled absences for Alisson, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and others. Slot lamented rarely fielding his £320m attacking trio of Ekitike, Isak and Florian Wirtz together, with just 88 minutes shared before Tuesday.
Sky Sports analyst Vinny O'Connor called it a "terrible blow" for both player and club, especially as Liverpool chase a top-five Premier League finish. With Ekitike out, the Reds' forward options thin out at a critical juncture.
