Arsenal's European Run Has Arrived at the Perfect Time
Posted on May 06, 2026, updated on May 06, 2026
Arsenal’s place in the Champions League final feels like a major statement, even if the attention has often been elsewhere. Their unbeaten run to Budapest has been overshadowed by the Premier League title race, but this European campaign deserves to be treated as something special in its own right.
A 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, sealed by Bukayo Saka’s first-half finish, completed a 2-1 aggregate victory and sent Arsenal through to only their second Champions League final. They have now gone 14 matches unbeaten in the competition, beaten elite opposition such as Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, and conceded just six goals along the way.
That defensive record matters. Arsenal have repeatedly found ways to stay calm, stay organised and avoid the kind of chaos that tends to end knockout campaigns. Even when they have not produced their most polished football, they have still looked hard to break down and hard to knock out.
Mikel Arteta said the atmosphere around Emirates Stadium was unlike anything he had experienced before, with supporters welcoming the team bus in flares and chants. He described the night as historic and said the club had made history together, while Declan Rice stressed that the team knew exactly what was at stake.
There is also a wider sense that Arsenal may finally be peaking at the right time. After a difficult spell in the league, they responded with a strong win over Fulham and then carried that momentum into Europe. Rice said the team had turned a corner, found a new way of playing and regained confidence at the sharpest end of the season.
The Premier League title remains within reach too. Manchester City’s dropped points at Everton mean Arsenal now control their own fate. That creates the possibility of a rare double, with a first league title in 22 years and a first Champions League crown both still alive.
For Arteta, this is about more than one good run. He has been trying to turn Emirates Stadium into a place that feels like a proper fortress, and the support on Tuesday showed that process is working. What remains is to turn the atmosphere, the progress and the confidence into silverware.
Arsenal’s European run may not have always dominated the conversation, but it now looks like one of the defining achievements of their modern era.
