Why Arsenal Believe They Can Beat PSG
Posted on May 07, 2026, updated on May 07, 2026
Arsenal have every reason to believe they can beat Paris St-Germain in the Champions League final, even if PSG arrive as the more explosive side on paper. Mikel Arteta’s team have built their run to Budapest on defensive control, discipline and the ability to stay calm in the biggest moments.
The decisive moment in the semi-final against Atletico Madrid came from Bukayo Saka’s goal, but Arsenal’s progression was also protected by Gabriel’s last-ditch defending after a mistake by William Saliba. That combination of attacking quality and defensive recovery has defined their European campaign.
Arsenal have kept nine clean sheets in 14 Champions League matches and have conceded only two goals across six knockout games. That record gives them a real platform against PSG, who have scored heavily but also concede more chances. In simple terms, Arsenal may not have the flashiest attack in the final, but they may have the sturdier base.
There is also a sense that this Arsenal side is more mature than past versions. They finished the league phase unbeaten, beat top opponents such as Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan, and have now gone 14 Champions League games without defeat. That is not the profile of a team reaching the final by accident.
Pundits have pointed out that PSG’s attack is extraordinary, but Arsenal’s defence and goalkeeper give them a chance to neutralize that threat. Clarence Seedorf and others have argued that no team wins trophies without a strong defence, and Arsenal’s back line has been one of the best in Europe this season.
PSG will still be favourites in many eyes because of their firepower and recent European pedigree. But Arsenal have already shown they can survive difficult moments, frustrate strong opponents and win by staying compact and efficient.
That is why this final feels open. PSG may have the bigger attack, but Arsenal have the kind of defensive foundation that can make a one-off final tilt their way.
