Newcastle Sink West Ham as Relegation Pressure Rises
Posted on May 18, 2026, updated on May 18, 2026
West Ham’s Premier League survival hopes were dealt another major blow after a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle left them staring at the Championship. The result means Tottenham need just a point from their final two matches to condemn the Hammers to relegation, and West Ham are now relying on help from Chelsea and Everton to keep their season alive.
The match at St James’ Park quickly turned against the visitors. Newcastle struck twice in four first-half minutes, and both goals exposed West Ham’s fragility. The opener came after Mads Hermansen’s poor pass out from the back was intercepted in effect by Harvey Barnes, who crossed for an unmarked Nick Woltemade to finish. The second was sharper from the home side, with Jacob Ramsey setting up Will Osula, while West Ham’s defending again left them open.
Nuno Espirito Santo reacted early, abandoning his initial back-three set-up and introducing Taty Castellanos after just 26 minutes. The change brought immediate improvement. Castellanos forced Nick Pope into a save and West Ham briefly looked more threatening, but their hopes were hit again when Newcastle capitalised on another mistake. From a West Ham throw-in, the visitors lost possession, and Joe Willock combined with Osula before the latter completed his brace to make it 3-0.
West Ham did at least produce a response. Castellanos latched onto a long pass from Hermansen, with Sven Botman misjudging the ball, and scored a superb lob from 25 yards. The goal lifted the visitors and briefly raised hopes of an unlikely comeback. Jarrod Bowen then went close, and Castellanos later struck the frame of the goal, but the momentum did not last.
Newcastle steadied themselves and saw out the win, a result that strengthens their own hopes of finishing on a high and leaves West Ham needing a dramatic turnaround in the final week. With Tottenham ahead on goal difference and points, the margin for error is now minimal. If Spurs lose at Chelsea, West Ham must beat Leeds and hope Everton win at Spurs on the final day.
After the game, Nuno Espirito Santo admitted his team had started poorly and been too soft in the key moments. He said the mistakes were costly, the team’s organisation was too open, and the performance was not a step forward. He also acknowledged the frustration of the fans, saying he understood their anger and that the squad must finish the season with dignity and respect for the club.
Eddie Howe, meanwhile, praised Newcastle’s improvement in recent weeks. He said his side were not perfect but looked excellent in spells, especially in the first half, and described the performance as another sign that the team are beginning to rediscover their form.
