24 Hours of Pain for Manchester City as Guardiola Exit Rumours and Title Loss Hit Hard

Posted on May 20, 2026, updated on May 20, 2026

Manchester City endured a devastating 24 hours that left the club facing both the loss of the Premier League title and growing uncertainty over Pep Guardiola’s future. What began as a week of tension turned into a major turning point on Tuesday night, when City’s 1-1 draw at Bournemouth confirmed Arsenal as champions and ended the Gunners’ 22-year wait for the league crown.

The blow was made even heavier by the report a day earlier that Guardiola is expected to leave the club after a decade in charge, although the manager has insisted no final decision has been made. Guardiola said he will first speak to chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak before deciding his next move, and stressed that he still has a year left on his contract. He also said he did not want to make any announcement while City still have important matches to play, including Sunday’s final league game against Aston Villa.

Even in defeat, Guardiola responded with characteristic grace. He congratulated Arsenal, Mikel Arteta and the club’s staff, acknowledging the work they had done to deserve the title. Arsenal’s triumph was especially significant because it came under Guardiola’s former assistant Arteta, who has now delivered the club’s first Premier League title since 2004.

The atmosphere around City reflected the uncertainty. Guardiola was met by a wall of cameras before kick-off at Bournemouth, while supporters pleaded with him to stay and chanted his name throughout the game. By the end, he was the first to leave the pitch, heading quickly down the tunnel as his players stayed behind to acknowledge the travelling fans. The sense that a historic era may be ending was impossible to ignore.

If this is indeed Guardiola’s final season, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Since arriving in 2016, he has transformed Manchester City into one of the most dominant teams in English football history. Under his leadership, City became the first top-flight side to reach 100 points in a Premier League season, won four consecutive league titles, and completed a historic treble in 2023. This season brought a Carabao Cup and FA Cup double, but for the second year in a row the league title slipped away.

The likely transition to Enzo Maresca would usher in a new chapter, but also an enormous challenge. Maresca, another Guardiola disciple, is understood to be the preferred candidate and has strong ties to City from his time in the academy and as part of the treble-winning staff. Yet filling Guardiola’s shoes will be an immense task, especially with changes expected in the squad and leadership group this summer.

As the club prepares for possible upheaval, the bigger question is what comes next. Guardiola has already changed the standard at City and across English football, and his departure would leave a gap that will not be easy to fill. Sunday's game against Aston Villa now feels less like a title fight and more like the emotional closing act of one of the most successful managerial reigns the Premier League has ever seen.
