Real Madrid agree £51.8m deal to sign Chelsea's Marc Cucurella

Real Madrid have agreed a deal worth up to £51.8m to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella after the World Cup. The Spain international will move for an initial £47.5m, with a further £4.3m in add-ons.
Cucurella is currently away with Spain at the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but the transfer has already been settled between the clubs and the player’s representatives. The 27-year-old had been linked with a return to Spain for some time, especially given his Barcelona academy background and previous interest from Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea paid £63m to sign Cucurella from Brighton in 2022, and he still had three years left on his contract. That likely helped make the deal possible, even though he had agreed improved terms last season without extending his stay.
The move follows a difficult period at Chelsea. Cucurella was among a group of Spanish-speaking players said to be unhappy with the situation after Enzo Maresca’s mid-season departure, and he later criticised the club’s hierarchy during the March international break. Chelsea eventually finished 10th, missed out on European football and went through further managerial change before appointing Xabi Alonso for the 2026-27 campaign.
Real Madrid’s summer rebuild is also expected to continue elsewhere. Since Florentino Perez’s re-election and Jose Mourinho’s return as manager, the club have been linked with Bernardo Silva, Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, who is set to join after leaving Liverpool.
For Madrid, Cucurella offers experience, versatility and familiarity with Spanish football. For Chelsea, it is another major sale in a summer of change.
