Mbappe becomes France's all-time top scorer in win over Senegal

Kylian Mbappe made history with a brilliant double as France beat Senegal 3-1 in their World Cup opener in New Jersey. The Real Madrid forward moved clear of Olivier Giroud to become France’s all-time leading scorer, while also reminding everyone why he remains one of the tournament’s biggest stars.
France struggled badly in the first half and managed only one shot, with Senegal looking the more dangerous side. The Africans came closest when Ismaila Sarr missed from close range, firing over from six yards in first-half stoppage time. France also had a scare when Nicolas Jackson hit the post.
Mbappe had a quiet opening period and even saw a potential penalty overturned after a VAR review. But France improved sharply after the break, helped by the creative play of Michael Olise. In the 66th minute, Mbappe met Olise’s defence-splitting pass with a first-time finish to score France’s opener and equal Giroud’s record of 57 goals.
Senegal briefly responded when substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, nicknamed by some as the next Mbappe, scored a fine individual goal late on. But France had already taken control by then, with Bradley Barcola adding a second after running onto a smart pass from Adrien Rabiot.
Then came the record-breaking moment. In stoppage time, Mbappe unleashed a powerful long-range strike to make it 3-1 and move onto 58 France goals, standing alone at the top of the nation’s scoring charts. It was also his 14th World Cup goal, putting him level with Gerd Muller and within reach of the all-time tournament record.
Mbappe said afterwards that he plays to make history and help France reach the final and win the World Cup. He admitted the win was not straightforward, but said the result gives the team more peace of mind. France will now turn their attention to their next group match against Iraq.
The performance was also a response to criticism over his form and defensive work. After a difficult first half, Mbappe answered in the best possible way, producing the kind of decisive display that has defined his career.
