Man Utd agree £50m deal for Chelsea midfielder Santos

Manchester United have agreed a £50m deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, moving quickly to solve a growing problem in central midfield. The Brazilian will cost an initial £48m, with a further £2m in achievable add-ons, and Chelsea have also secured a 10% sell-on clause.
The deal moved fast after United made their interest known over the weekend. Santos has now been cleared for a medical, and the move comes as United’s senior players prepare to return for pre-season training on Thursday.
United needed reinforcements. Casemiro has left after his contract expired, Manuel Ugarte is out for an extended spell with knee-ligament damage and Elliot Anderson became too expensive. Mateus Fernandes was another target, but he chose Tottenham instead, leaving United short of midfield options.
That is why Santos became such an attractive option. He already knows the Premier League, having made 28 appearances in England including a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, and at 22 he still has room to improve. United believe he can bring energy and athleticism to a midfield that has lacked both.
Chelsea’s decision to sell also makes sense. Santos has shown promise, but he has been behind the established pairing of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. He wanted more first-team football, and Chelsea were willing to let him go, especially because they are set to make a large profit on the £16m they paid Vasco da Gama in 2023.
For Chelsea, the sale is part of a wider reshaping. They have already moved Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Tyrique George to Everton, while Trevoh Chalobah is also expected to leave. With no European football next season, player sales have become an important part of the club’s planning.
United may still not be done in midfield, either. With Ederson also set to complete a move after Brazil’s World Cup exit, the club have addressed major gaps, but there is still a sense that another signing could follow.
For now, though, Santos looks like a smart solution for United and a profitable exit for Chelsea. It is a deal that suits both sides for different reasons.
