Tuchel pledges to stay on despite England's World Cup heartbreak
Posted on July 16, 2026, updated on July 16, 2026
Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he will remain in charge of England until Euro 2028 despite their painful World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. The loss denied England a first World Cup final since 1966, but Tuchel said his contract runs through the home European Championship and that he intends to continue.
England were left to rue a dramatic collapse in Atlanta after Anthony Gordon had given them the lead. Argentina came back late through Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, turning a promising night into another crushing disappointment for England.
Tuchel acknowledged that the timing makes it hard to look ahead, but he stressed that England reaching the semi-finals is still an achievement. He pointed out that many major nations do not even get that far, and said the team must recover professionally before their third-place play-off against France in Miami.
Harry Kane was equally blunt about how the game slipped away. The England captain said that once his side went 1-0 up, they seemed to try to hold on, and that approach was not enough at this level. He felt the team had pressed well before the goal, but after that Argentina built sustained pressure and England could not cope.
Kane also said the squad had followed Tuchel’s message to keep pushing for a second goal, but the momentum went the other way. In his view, the team still lacked the final piece needed to turn strong tournament runs into a title challenge.
That theme has now become familiar for England. They have repeatedly reached the latter stages of major tournaments under different managers, but the decisive moment has still not gone their way. Tuchel’s challenge now is to turn another semi-final appearance into something more lasting by the time Euro 2028 arrives.
For now, the immediate task is simpler: bounce back against France and leave the World Cup with something more positive than regret. Tuchel says the squad will do that, even if the disappointment of Argentina will take time to fade.
