FIFA opens formal inquiry into Argentina's post-final brawl

FIFA has launched a formal investigation into the ugly scenes that followed Argentina’s 1-0 World Cup final defeat to Spain, appointing a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the post-match altercations. The inquiry could lead to suspensions for individuals and fines for the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

The flashpoint came after the final whistle in New Jersey, when Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Rodri as the Spanish midfielder ran to join the celebrations. Leandro Paredes then confronted Eric García, grabbing him by the throat and pushing him to the ground, while other Argentina players and staff, including Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were drawn into the melee. Unused substitute Gavi was also involved before the groups were separated.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee said it had assessed the match reports and, under Article 36 of its Disciplinary Code, appointed a prosecutor to investigate “potential breaches” related to the post-match incidents. Further details will be released once the prosecutor’s report is completed, but those found guilty could face global bans, and the AFA could also be fined for bringing the sport into disrepute.

The scrutiny is the latest in a series of disciplinary issues around Argentina’s national team. After the 2022 final win over France, the AFA was charged with offensive behaviour and fair‑play violations and later fined, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez received a two‑game ban in 2024 for “offensive behaviour” in World Cup qualifiers. At this tournament, the AFA already faces a probable fine over a Falklands/Malvinas banner displayed after the semi-final win against England.

There is no set timetable for the prosecutor to conclude the investigation, and FIFA has not indicated which specific players or staff members are under the closest scrutiny. But the appointment of a prosecutor rather than a routine review signals that the governing body is treating the incidents as a serious breach of conduct, not just a momentary flare‑up.
