Vinicius Junior ends Arsenal hopes by signing new Real Madrid deal

Vinicius Junior has signed a new six-year contract extension with Real Madrid, tying him to the club until 2032 and ending months of speculation over his future. The 26-year-old Brazil international had entered the final year of his previous deal, and Arsenal were monitoring the situation closely as a potential marquee left-wing target.

Real Madrid confirmed the agreement on Thursday, saying Vinicius has become “one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history.” The player himself posted on Instagram: “Eight years at the Bernabeu is too short… six more years and forever,” after joining from Flamengo aged 18.

The renewal comes after improved contract talks with the club’s hierarchy and a reportedly strong relationship with new head coach Jose Mourinho, who has always seen Vinicius as a central figure in his team. Financial terms were not disclosed, but reports suggest the deal is worth close to €24m net per season plus add-ons, ending a long stand-off that had left his future uncertain.

For Arsenal, the decision closes the door on one of their most ambitious attacking targets. Mikel Arteta had identified an elite left winger as a priority, and Vinicius was the leading name on that list, but the Gunners will now have to look elsewhere. Arteta said after the pre-season loss to Real Betis that the club remains “optimistic” about the market and is working to “attack every possible title,” while also pushing ahead with a £75m deal for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Arsenal have agreed a fee with Newcastle for Guimaraes, who has been undergoing a medical in London, and the expectation is that the move will be completed soon. With Vinicius staying in Madrid, the focus now shifts to whether Arteta can still land another top-level wide forward before the window closes, or whether the incoming midfield reinforcement will be the major statement of the summer.
