Doue seals Super Cup for PSG as teenage Madjo shines for Aston Villa

Paris Saint-Germain began the 2026-27 season with silverware after Desire Doue’s second-half winner secured a 2-1 UEFA Super Cup victory over Aston Villa in Salzburg. PSG retained the trophy, but Unai Emery’s depleted side pushed the European champions all the way.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute, cutting in from the left before firing beyond Marco Bizot. Villa responded through 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo, who became the youngest scorer in Super Cup history on his professional debut when he held off Willian Pacho and volleyed home before half-time.

Madjo was a persistent threat throughout the first half and could easily have had more than one goal, while fellow teenager George Hemmings also looked comfortable against elite opposition. Villa were without Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez after their extended post-World Cup breaks, making the young players’ performances all the more impressive.

Doue restored PSG’s lead shortly after the hour mark, racing onto Ousmane Dembele’s pass and finishing into the far corner. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but awarded after VAR showed Matty Cash had played him onside. Hemmings almost replied immediately, only for Matvey Safonov to produce a key save.

Emery said Villa “must feel proud” of their performance despite the defeat, particularly given the opportunities created and the way Madjo and Hemmings handled the occasion. PSG had the decisive quality when it mattered, but Villa left Salzburg with two emerging talents having announced themselves on a major European stage.
