Carrick says Manchester United "want and need" more signings

Michael Carrick has urged Manchester United to continue strengthening before the transfer window closes on 1 September, saying the club “want more” and “need more” despite already improving key areas of the squad. United have spent around £85m on midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while Karl Darlow has arrived on a free transfer to provide goalkeeping depth.

Carrick said he is pleased with the business completed so far, highlighting greater balance and quality in the squad, but made clear that the work is unfinished. United are still looking for a left-back and could pursue another central midfielder, particularly after Mason Mount’s fitness scare during pre-season.

Lewis Hall remains a player United admire, although Newcastle have previously insisted he is not for sale. Fulham’s Antonee Robinson has also been considered, while Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly is a long-term target whose ability to play at left-back and in midfield makes him especially attractive.

The club may not now prioritise a new forward because Marcus Rashford has been fully reintegrated after Barcelona chose not to trigger its £26m option to buy him. Carrick said Rashford has trained well, is in good form and adds qualities that United otherwise lack, including a direct left-wing option and alternative through the middle.

Rashford could make his first United appearance since December 2024 in the upcoming friendly against AC Milan. His return gives Carrick another major decision as he prepares for his first full season in charge: use an established player with 87 Premier League goals for the club, or move him on if the right offer arrives. For now, though, Carrick’s message is clear – Rashford is part of the group, but the transfer push must continue.
