Saka strike keeps Arsenal's title defence perfect

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as Arsenal earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park to make it two wins from two in their Premier League title defence.

The match was closely contested, but Saka’s close-range finish just before the hour mark settled the contest and gave Mikel Arteta’s side another clean sheet. Arsenal are among the early leaders with six points, while Villa remain without a point or a shot on target after two matches.

Villa show greater resilience

Unai Emery’s much-changed side responded strongly after their 4-0 defeat by Brighton on the opening weekend.

Villa started with energy and came closest to scoring in the first half when Emiliano Buendía struck the crossbar from distance after 12 minutes. New goalkeeper Zion Suzuki also made an encouraging debut, producing several confident saves and displaying impressive distribution.

Nicolas Jackson started in attack after moving from Chelsea, while Suzuki replaced Emiliano Martínez following the Argentine’s transfer to Stamford Bridge.

Villa defended with far greater organisation than they had against Brighton and limited Arsenal to few clear chances. However, they were unable to create a shot on target of their own.

Arsenal’s pressure pays off

Arsenal controlled possession for long periods but struggled to break through before half-time. Gabriel’s mistimed header was their best opportunity during a cautious opening period.

Christos Tzolis was replaced at the interval after being booked, with Eberechi Eze introduced to add more attacking threat. The change helped Arsenal increase the pressure.

Saka thought he had won a penalty early in the second half after a challenge from Ian Maatsen, but a VAR review showed that the foul had occurred just outside the penalty area.

The decision did not prove costly. Three minutes later, Eze released Riccardo Calafiori down the left, and the full-back sent a low cross across the six-yard box. Saka reacted quickly to force the ball past Suzuki in the 59th minute.

Champions show their strength

Villa pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Arsenal defended compactly and managed the closing stages well.

Kai Havertz came close to adding a second but was denied by Suzuki in a one-on-one situation, while Arsenal introduced Bruno Guimarães and former Villa defender Ezri Konsa to help see out the victory.

Arteta described the result as a “massive win”, particularly because Arsenal lost this fixture last season in dramatic fashion.

“It’s a tough place to come and earn the three points,” Arteta said. “We deserved it. It was a great squad performance.”

Emery remains optimistic

Emery accepted the defeat but was encouraged by Villa’s improved defensive performance and their ability to compete with the champions.

“We’ve lost, but we competed well,” he said. “We are trying to rebuild the team, but there are a lot of positive things.”

Suzuki was one of the standout performers on his debut. He made an early mistake when failing to claim a cross but quickly recovered, tipping a header over the bar and later denying Havertz.

Arsenal now have back-to-back victories and two clean sheets, while Villa face the challenge of rebuilding their confidence and squad after a difficult start. For the champions, this was not a spectacular performance, but it was a mature and controlled display—the kind that can prove decisive over a long title race.
