Ronaldo handed 30-day ban and €255 fine after Portugal camp walkout
Posted on October 20, 2026, updated on October 20, 2026
Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for 30 days and fined €255 (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team camp in September, though the ban will be complete before Portugal’s November Nations League fixtures.
What happened
The 41‑year‑old captain walked out of Portugal’s Nations League camp in Copenhagen on 30 September after being an unused substitute against Norway and learning he would not start against Denmark on 1 October. In a lengthy statement, Ronaldo accused coach Jorge Jesus of twice “breaking his word” and described it as an “absolute breach of trust”.
The FPF’s disciplinary council upheld the charge in full, imposing the minimum suspension available under its regulations (which range from one to six months) plus the fine.
Timing of the ban
The suspension runs from the day of the Denmark match, meaning Ronaldo has already served 19 days and will complete the ban by the end of October. Portugal host Denmark on 14 November and travel to Wales on 17 November—by which time Ronaldo will be eligible again.
Mitigating factors and Ronaldo’s defence
The FPF said it considered Ronaldo’s remorse, his contributions to Portuguese football, and his athletic merit. He submitted his CV, including awards and achievements, as part of his defence, and referenced an earlier statement in which he accepted accountability and apologised to team‑mates and fans.
What next for Ronaldo and Portugal
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus denied making any agreement with Ronaldo but has left the door open for a return. FPF president Pedro Proenca told Record there is a “strong desire” to bring Ronaldo back once the matter is resolved.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all‑time top scorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances—both men’s world records—and helped the country win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles. He joined Al‑Nassr in December 2022 on a reported £177m annual salary and signed a contract extension last year.
